古時候宋國有個人，看到自己田裏的禾苗長得太慢，心裏很着急。

這天，他乾脆下田動手把禾苗一株株地往上拔高一節。他疲憊不堪地回到家裏，對家裏的人說："今天可把我累壞了！我一下子讓禾苗長高了許多！"

他的兒子聽了，連忙跑到田裏去看。田裏的禾苗全部枯萎了。

寓意：任何事物都有自己的'規律；誰如果違背規律蠻幹，就必然受到懲罰。

宋人有閔其苗之不長而揠之者，芒芒然歸，謂其人曰："今日病矣！予助苗長矣！"其子趨而往視之，苗則稿矣。

宋國有個人，是個急性子。

Day and night he longed for the seedlings in the field to grow tall and strong quickly.

他日日夜夜盼望田裏的秧苗快快長高長大。

But the seedlings grew very slowly,not as quickly as he hoped.

可是，秧苗長得很慢，沒有像他所希望的那樣長得快。

One day, he hit upon a good idea.

有一天，他想出了一個好辦法。

He sneaked to the field andpulled each seedling up a little bit from the soil.

他自己睜哨地跑到田裏，把每一棵秧苗都從泥土裏往上拔高了一些。

Seeing that all these edlings in the field were taller than before, he felt very pleased with himself.

看到田裏的秧苗都比原來高了，他心裏感到樂滋滋的。

He went home. Though all worn out, he told the members of his family happily:

回到家裏，他雖然筋疲力盡，但是非常高興地告訴家人說:

"I worked for a whole day today.

“今天，我幹了一整天。

How tired I am! But the seedlings in the field have grown a lot taller."

好累啊!不過，田裏的秧苗倒是長高好多了。”

When his son heard that the seedlings had grown taller, he hurried to the field to take a look.

他的兒子聽說秧苗長高了，連忙跑到田裏去看。

Oh, what a mess!Instead of growing taller, the seedlings had all started to wither.
